Well i have a 69 gm bus and dont no anything about engine other than its a detroit diesel engine it has been parked for a long time but i would start it up every now and then till one day i started it up andit ran for about 20 min and then idled to a stop. I can get it to start with starting fluid but turns off when i quit spraying starting fluid.I have worked on all kinds of cars but nothing this big and have no idea what to do next. Ive taking filters off and filled with new diesel but that hasent worked. What should i try next?

Check the fuel return line , to be sure you have fuel to the injectors, Do you get any smoke when cranking? The injectors are controlled by a rack inside the rocker cover. It has levers that move each injector rack in unison , to accelerate and to idle with the governor control. Remove the rocker cover and locate the rack tube, it should move in and out with the injector levers, If the tube doesn't move, one of the injectors is stuck, and will need to be replaced. Let me know what you find and need.

The rocker cover is the valve cover on top of the engine, The return line is the line that comes out the top fittings in the side of the head that goes to the fuel tank. The pressure line is the lower fitting that comes from the fuel filter, I would recommend that you get a service manual for 71 series inline engine. Ebay has them, let me find the link.http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=Detroit+Diesel+71+series+manual&_sacat=041094.0794797454

Is it a v engine or an inline 6 cylinder? In 1969 the 71 series is all that was used. Is it an old Greyhound or Trailways bus? Only difference could be a left handed engine!..Can you see a model number or serial number stamped into the block? Something starting with 6A-????? , That would make it inline 71 series.
