Is coconut oil good or bad for you?

Hello,

Myself Dr Josh- and I’m happy to help with your question today.

Well, Coconut oil has a multitude of health benefits.

Apart from skin care and hair care, this oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in actively preventing various heart problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol.

It also strengthens the immune system because it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid.

It also improves the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion-related problems including irritable bowel syndrome.

It gives relief from stress and has antioxidant properties.

Hope this helped

Ok but I am conflicted because it is considered saturated fat right?

Well, I can understand your concern.

Yes, Coconut oil is high in natural saturated fats.

Saturated fats not only increase the healthy cholesterol ( HDL) in your body, but also help to convert the LDL “bad” cholesterol into good cholesterols.

So, coconut oil is good for healthy heart.

I hope this helps.

What about saturated fats that come from animals?

Dear customer,

Thank you for your question.

To reduce the risk of heart disease and improve “good” (HDL) cholesterol levels we need to eat more unsaturated fat than saturated and trans fats. Therefore butter, whole milk, cuts of meat with visible fat, fried chicken, and baked goods needs to be avoided, and instead foods higher in unsaturated fat such as that found in vegetable oils, avocado, and tuna fish should be preferred.

that contradicts coconut oil right?

Dear customer,

Thank you for your reply.

Coconut oil may have some benefits (though further studies are needed to confirm these claims), and eating coconut oil in moderation is not harmful, but it's not likely to help you lose weight either. Therefore it is better to avoid using this oil since this is high in saturated fat, but if it has to be used then use it in moderation.

Take care.
