In an adult circumsicion, is it possible to be "knocked out" (under anesthesia) by gas? Meaning, is it possible to "go under" before the use of needles?

I guess the question was more on the administering of the general anesthesia. Is it possible to go under by gas for this procedure and, if so, does that involve needles before being "knocked out".
