This surgery is done under local or general anesthesia after an anesthetist review and his/her advice as to which type of anesthesia is recommended. No incisions are required and the surgery is done through the nose. Two main techniques are used for the procedure. The technique used depends on where the polyps are located in your nose. If the polyps are easily seen, then an intranasal polypectomy may be done. However more commonly small telescopes are used to get a better view in the nose and this is known as endoscopic nasal polypectomy. This endoscopes are used if the polyps are smaller and located in the roof of the nose or in the sinuses.
After the operation you may be discharged the same day, but sometimes you may be asked to stay one night in hospital. You will need to arrange someone to take you home from hospital since you should not drive after your operation. For recovery you will require at least 2 days off work. However avoid strenuous activity for the first several days after the operation so that your nose can fully heal. Also you need to you use a nasal saline douche (salt water) to rinse your nose after the operation and this needs to be continued for at least a month.
