IBS is a condition in which your intestines develop inflammation and don't move exactly the way they should, let me explain in more detail.

Expert:  Dr. Mo replied 1 month ago.

What happens is that food that moves through the intestines at times moves through too fast or too slow. It causes inflammation of the walls of the intestines. This creates bloating and pain. Diarrhea and constipation are also common with IBS.

Usually there is no blood in the stool but mucous is common.

Some people get a lot of gas others don't.

It's not anything dangerous but uncomfortable.

Treatment is change in diet usually and sometimes Imodium is given for management.

Expert:  Dr. Mo replied 1 month ago.

For most patient we try to control their stress level, studies have shown that stress increases the bouts of IBS attacks.

For others we manage with dietary changes.

Expert:  Dr. Mo replied 1 month ago.

Most people get bouts 1-2x per year but some people will get it almost weekly.

For the more frequent bouts we opt for medications such as Lyrica or Lexapro to help control the levels of serotonin in the intestines.

For the milder cases we prescribe Bentyl.
