Customer Question

i'm a former smoker and smoked 21 yrs / 1 pack/day, i quit 9 yrs ago and i'm a runner. i developed dry cough with no phlegm and some shortness of breath while running. doctor thinks asthma/copd - my mom had copd. i took a pft yesterday and results came back slightly abnormal/mild. my doctor said it's not a diagnosis for COPD becuase she may also test slightly abnormal. i am to continue on my inhalers and no further testing is required. i still feel unclear as to my diagnosis. do i have copd or asthma? if i don't have copd, why am i still using inhalers

Hello this is Dr. Salama MD,

If the PFTs did not indicate that you have COPD then you don't have COPD.

Without seeing the results it's hard to tell if you have asthma.

However, the medications you are taking can be for both of those or for what's known as reactive airway disease which can mimic asthma and requires the same treatment.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

If not, please don't forget to leave a positive rating (bonus appreciated) as that's the only way I get credit for answering your question.

Thank you!
