HI there,

Arteries are blocked by so called plaques. They consist of fat, cholesterol, calcium, cellular waste and fibrin, a substance that is involved in blood clotting. The plaques grow within the years, quicker if you smoke, have diabetes or untreated high blood pressure. The plaque alters the cells of the arteries that also grow and expedites the clotting.
