My husband was diagnosed with herpes Meningioencephalitis

Customer Question

Hello my husband was diagnosed with herpes Meningioencephalitis caused by herpes simplex 1. He had a cold sore on his lip for several weeks prior to this horribly painful condition. He was hospitalized for 11 days for treatment. He is home since 5/26/16.
Now with the onset of another cold sore would acyclovir be prescribed to try to keep it from becoming meningitis again. I understand that the meningitis could happen to him again.
We see his pcp wednesday. The nurse said go to the ER or walk in clinic. Please give us your best advice. Thank you

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Yes it should be prescribed.

Your husband is at higher risk than normal for recurrent meningitis.

In this case, Acyclovir should be started soon 400 mg 5 times daily orally.

This should be started within 72 hours.

You should take him to the walk in clinic being cheaper.
Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
