What causes my leg to swell up by my ankle

The most concerning possibility would be a blood clot.

Particularly of this is one leg.

If this is both legs, bad veins, heart disease, thyroid disease, or kidney disease are possible.

I suggest an exam right now, and an ultrasound of the affected leg to rule out a clot.
