I am a 54 yr old male and I have had a very bad anal itch

Customer Question

I am a 54 yr old male and I have had a very bad anal itch for the past 12 months. I have tried everything that I know to do. I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in November of 2015. I had a successful prostectomy in January '16, and the cancer was completely removed. I thought that this may have been the cause of the anal itch, but the itch continues on.

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Persistent anal itching can be due to the nerve inflammation supplying the area.

This is likely if no skin changes seen around the itchy area.

Nerve related itching is best treated with oral medication.

Gabapentin 900 mg daily should be effective in most cases.

Topically Doxepine gel can be tried daily as an alternative.

Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
