My husband has Parkinsons & is having s knee replace. Dr has

Customer Question

My husband has Parkinsons & is having his knee replace. Dr has recommended iron supplements for 4 wks prior to surgery. The Parkinsons meds make him a little constipated which in the past has been quite a problem, as the meds are absorbed in the intestines. I am concerned about taking the iron, which also can cause constipation. What do you recommend he do while taking the extra iron to avoid constipation prior to his surgery?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Your husband should take a stool softener daily.

Metamucil, and Senna tablets can be taken daily to soften the stool.

Also vitamin C supplementation 250 mg with iron helps better absorption.

Should be manageable.

He already takes a daily stool softener. Should he be taking more with this additional 325 mg of either ferrous gluconate or ferrous sufate .. We had an episode with constipation a couple of years ago that took us to the er & we don't want to do that again! He has to take the added iron for 4 wks prior to surgery.

It is important to void anemia before surgery.

This will prevent any requirement of blood transfusion.

Hence iron should be taken daily as recommended by his doctor.

Yes he needs to add a laxative meanwhile to prevent severe constipation.

Miralax and senna tablets are stronger laxatives --can be taken for now till iron taking period.

That should help.
