Customer Question

Every time I have a bowel movement, I have excruciating stabbing and burning pains in my large intestine...if I don't eat and don't have one for a day or so, I feel fine, but then when I eat, it happens again and lasts for hours...any suggestions?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

This is likely due to the intestinal motility disorder.

Muscle spasms can be triggered by the hard stool commonly.

You should follow a high fiber diet and drink plenty of fluids like prune juice, apple juice to prevent hard stool.

Stool softer is ok.

But a fiber supplement like Citrucel is more favored to soften the stool and regulate bowel contractions.

A probiotic like Culturelle digestive health twice daily is perfect to restore intestinal balance.

There are prescription medications to address the issue as well.

Lubiprostone is one such medication 24 mcg twice daily to regulate intestinal contraction and also prevent constipation.

A colonoscopy is also recommended to rule out diverticular disease, polyps triggering such symptoms.

Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
