Typically gout would cause not only pain but also swelling of the toe and a redness of the overlying skin as well.
But gout is still a possibility.
I would recommend that you be seen by your doctor to have this evaluated further.
You will initially require anti-inflammatory medications like indomethacin or other anti-inflammatory agents for the pain.
Over-the-counter pain medications like motrin or aleve may also help
Uric acid levels in an acute episode of gout may be normal but can be raised.
