Customer Question

approximately 4 yrs ago I had my esphogus stretched because I was choking and passing out. The dr. who did the procedure told me then in no uncertain terms that I had to quit smoking. Of course, being an avid smoker (and nothing would happen to me) I continued smoking. I have been 10 days smoke free. However, I am having an upper gi because I have a harsh persistant cough, terrible heartburn and gerd, I get laryngitis frequently along with sore throats. I was wondering if there could be some major damage to my throat because of me smoking for 30 some yrs. I am really worried.

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

After all that you are still able to swallow food and beverage.

And you still have good voice.

These factors speak against any serious damage to the larynx, pharynx etc.

However you do have chronic inflammation from smoking which should improve over time.

For confirmation you can get a direct laryngoscopy by a ENT specialist as well.

Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
