Customer Question

I had a colonoscopy about 6 months ago because i had a lower left abdominal pain, the colonoscopy showed that i had diverticulosis on my right colon and a few internal hemmorhoids. And now im starting to have flat stools everyday, could this be that there is a mass in my colon?

Hi there,

This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Diverticula are hollow cyst like structures on the colon lining.

Stool can get pressed while passing through them commonly.

Polyps and tumors are alo possible.

But their growth is not that fast.

Hence very unlikely.

Constipation, improper diet are common causes of diverticular disease.

These factors can be addressed by high fiber diet.

Stool softeners like metamucil, methyl cellulose can be used to ensure regular bowel movement.

Probiotics also help to promote good colon health.

Probiotics substitute the bad bacteria in the colon with friendly bacteria.

Culturelle 30 counts capsules twice daily will be great.

Foods high in fiber include vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran.

Initially you should cook your vegetables well to make the fibers soluble for easy digestion.

If the diverticula is on my right side. And according to the colonoscopy procedure the was nothing but hemmorhoids on my left side. What could be the cuase of my pain on my left lower side abdomin?
Expert:  Dr Basu replied 1 year ago.

Diverticula can develop in the left side of the colon as well over 6 months.

Constipation can be a problem here.

Acute diverticultiis or inflammation of the diverticula from bacterial infection can cause pain.

That should be treated with antibiotics besides stool softener and high fiber diet.

This is Dr. David

I am another expert here.

I am a cancer doctor

it sounds like you are having too much worry about having a mass in your colon.

that would be super super unlikely at your age of 24

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18683051

pencil thin stools have been discredited as a sign of colon cancer.

anything that causes loose stools can cause thin or flat stools.

actually lots of fiber in your diet will cause softer and thin stools as well.

a polyp would not affect the quality of your stools.

kidney stones, bladder stones, irritation of your bladder from alcohol or caffeine, inguinal hernia, pulled groin muscle, strained abdominal muscles can all cause left lower abdominal pain.s

let me know if you have other questions.
