Generally speaking an upper reading over 180 or a lower reading over 110 is considered an emergency level of high blood pressure. The current recommendation is that if either reading is high, that you should rest for several minutes and then repeat the blood pressure. If the upper blood pressure continues to be over 180, then it is recommended that you be seen urgently.
