Customer Question

Hi, I have eosinophilic esophagitis. I have been having a really hard time swallowing lately and haven't had more than 400 calories a day in the past two weeks. Today, I am having a flare up and I took a large drink of gatorade. I swallowed it and about halfway down it met resistance, i swallowed again and i felt a POP like it forced something open and then it went down and I felt the POP again. Could this be a rupture in my esophagus?

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

The pop sound can also be due to the muscle spasms --esophagus is a muscular organ.

Rupture is unlikely without any severe pain.

However that is a possibility still which can only be ruled out with a CT scan.

The flare ups require high dose oral steroid like methyl prednisolone course to improve your symptoms.

Sometimes, there can be stenosis or narrowing of the esophagus.

That will require dilatation to restore swallowing function.

Please go to the ER for the CT scan to rule out rupture.

Also contact your GI specialist for further evaluation.

Best wishes,
It was my pleasure to help you today.
