Customer Question

Ever since a heat pump was installed in my house I have diarrhea and everyone who stays in my house gets it while they are here. From the moment the pump was installed this has been a problem. How can I find information on diarrhea incidences and heat pumps?

This is Dr. David

you can search the entire medical literature here

www.pubmed.gov

you should also see your doctor and ask your doctor about this issue and get your stools tested if you are having diarrhea.

are you having mostly water in your stool (diarrhea) or mostly stool (loose stool)?

different people have different ideas of what diarrhea is.

how old are you?

are you male or female?

what medications are you taking now?

Hi there,

This is Dr Basu, experienced InternalMedicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns andprovide great service.

Persistent diarhea and that too affecting other family members, suggest parasitic infection.

The heat pump installation may have been contaminated.

This can be due to the infection from giardia, amoeba or even legionella.

Hence Stool tests for parasites and urine tests for legionella antigen, and serology for giardia are recommended for further evaluation.

The heat pump should be inspected by the public health department.

Antibiotics will likely be needed for the complete treatment.

Best wishes,

It was my pleasure to help you today.

I was the first expert to help you.

I suggested that you see your doctor and get stool testing.

parasites of your GI system can cause diarrhea symptoms, but you are not drinking water from your heat pump system.

a heat pump works to cool or heat the air in your ventilation system.

are you having loose stools or diarrhea stools with mostly water

if you are having constant diarrhea of mostly water you could be dehydrated and you might need to go to the ER right away to be assessed for dehydration

Hi there,

This is Dr Basu, experienced InternalMedicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns andprovide great service.

As I suggested earlier post ( different from othe expert), you and your family members likely have parasitic infection.

The heat pump should be inspected by the public health department.

Stool and urine tests both are required--stool for ova and parasites, urine for legionella antigens

Antibiotics like metronidazole, ciprofloxacin will likely be needed for the complete treatment for intestinal parasites.

Legionella disease is treated with azithromycin.
