Customer Question

3 nights this week not in a row I have woken up at 3 am with a very dull but painful upper abdoman ache. I am so full of gas that it is painful all the way to my back. It goes away in a few hours after drinking soda water and burping for a while then the next day I have a slight pain on my right side. This has happened after eating a fatty meal containing dairy that night. I suspect I am lactose intolerant. My stool the next day is dark green. Please help. Thanks, matt

This is Dr. David

it could be due to lactose intolerance

it could also be due to excessive stomach acid in your stomach

excessive stomach acid can cause painful upper left abdominal pain from inflammation of your stomach

you should try stomach acid reducers like zantac or maalox or mylanta or prilosec or nexium to help decrease stomach acid.

fatty meals can cause worse stomach acid production.

fatty meals can also cause inflammation of your gall bladder which is on the right side below your ribs.

I would to avoid fatty meals and also try stomach acid reducers and see if they help

and talk to your doctor about your symptoms as well

let me know if you have questions.
