Customer Question

I decided about 6mos ago to give myself a respite from drinking so i just quit,,,,,no problems caused this decision....no alcoholism ,no domestic conflicts etc......just decided to do this to give my body a break . I have always been a somewhat heavy drinker....but have never had a problem cutting down or even abstaining .I am in good health.
Now at 74 I am definitely not going back to any heavy drinking....but would like to drink enough to have the health benefits of drinking.
1 What is the daily amt. of alcohol to achieve these health benefits?
2.Can reintroducing this presumably lesser amt. of alcohol be cardio- beneficial after 6 mos off alcohol altogether from a formerly higher amt of alcohol.?

Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and I'm ready to help.
there is controversy in the amount of "healthy" alcohol for patients
some studies suggest only one alcoholic drink per day. some say 2
so really no more than 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day.
some doctors say no alcohol is best.
the best alcohol would be 1 glass of red wine per day.
re-indroducing 1-2 alcoholic drinks most likely will not have any real substantial heart benefits
alcohol can thin the blood, but other agents like aspirin or fish oil can do the same thing.
even 1-2 drinks a day can tax the liver and kidneys and can inflame the stomach lining in some patients.
so there can be negative side to 1-2 drinks a day.
so no alcohol is always best.
let me know if you have other questions.
