My feet have been swelling months almost every day.

Customer Question

My feet have been swelling for three months almost every day. Prior to this, my feet would swell sometimes (during/after a long flight and sometimes in the summer), but this has been consistent. A doctor prescribed furosemide (20mg), which helps but doesn't stop the swelling. I have been tested for a clot, and there isn't one. However, I just tried to give blood and my iron is low (10.0 on the first draw; 12.1 on the second). I have been taking a prenatal vitamin (I'm 44, but not pregnant). Should I be worried about kidney disease. No type 2 diabetes, borderline blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I have been dieting over the last 3 months and have lost 15 pounds. Not sure you need all this, but I'm a bit paranoid.

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, Experienced Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.
I understand your concerns.
Yes kidney problem also should be checked with blood and urine tests.
They are simple tests so can be ordered by your primary care doctor.
Anemia can also cause leg swelling sometimes by the way.
Most likely, you have incompetent veins from your weight problem.
The veins of the legs can be damaged and hence the blood tends to pool more causing swelling.
This type of swelling responds well to the compression stockings exerting 30-40 mm Hg of pressure.
Also a natural supplement called Horse chestnut extract 300 mg twice daily can help with the vein problem.
You can consult with a vascular surgeon about this after the normal kidney tests.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with us today. If you have any additional questions or need further clarifications, please do not hesitate to ask. I am here to answer them. I wish you good health. Regards, ***** *****
