This answer was rated:

I have been having stomach problems (ache in abdomen, loose stool), slightly swollen lymph nodes under jaw, and frequent urination for about 6 weeks. My blood tests all came back normal, with the exception of two things. My Albumin was 4.8 (normal range = 3.1 to 4.5 g/dl) and Gliadin IgA was 29.56 U/ml (normal range = 0.00 to 15.00 U/ml). My doctor is referring me to a gastroenterologist because she thinks this is possibly Celiac Disease. Does that sound right?

Hi there,

This is Dr. D.J., experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Dr. D.J. :

Yes that is very much possible.

Dr. D.J. :

Celiac disease can cause stomach symptoms.

Dr. D.J. :

There is also a possibility of viral infection.

Dr. D.J. :

Epstein barr virus is one suchexample.

Dr. D.J. :

The symptoms may persist for several weeks.

Customer:

Ok. My real fear is that this might be multiple myeloma. Is that possible? Likely?

Dr. D.J. :

However, elevated gliadin antibody does require further evaluation with an endoscopy.

Dr. D.J. :

no it is not possible.

Dr. D.J. :

Albumin is not a sign of MM.

Customer:

Is the Gliadin Iga the same as the protein Iga?

Dr. D.J. :

If your albumin was low and the globuin level high then maybe a consideration would have been given.

Dr. D.J. :

no --this is specific antibody against gluten

Customer:

So I was reading on the internet (I know not smart to do) that high Iga can be a sign of MM. So is the Glidian Iga not the same thing? I didn't understand.

Dr. D.J. :

no this is not the same thing.

Dr. D.J. :

Gliadin is an antigen specifically found in the wheat.

Dr. D.J. :

IgA antibodies are directed against that by body.

Dr. D.J. :

Your whole IgA level is not elevated and that is not a sign of MM by the way.

Customer:

So by having a high Gliadin IgA that doesn't mean a high Iga? Correct?

Dr. D.J. :

no

Customer:

Last thing. Just to soothe a hypochondriac, from what I told you, I should be worried about MM from these tests?

Dr. D.J. :

not at all.

Dr. D.J. :

these tests did not even look for MM.

Customer:

Great! Thanks my friend, you made my weekend. Have a great night.

Dr. D.J. :

they are specific for celiac disease only.

Dr. D.J. :

very welcome

Dr. D.J. :

Best wishes,
