How did you find out that you have aluminium poisoning?
All the symptoms for aluminum poisoning I have. Had all other tests done.
Was using an anti persperent often
what is your serum aluminium concentration?
I don't know. It is high because I have been suffering for a few years and am having episodes very often.
This is important to find out first.
The levels above 200 mcg/L requires measures to bring it down to below 200 mcg/L
Do you have chronic kidney disease?
I was told to take citrus magnesia that it would clear it out of me. No kidney disease. All tests show no medical problem.
Ok this is rare without any kidney disease.
However, there is a medication called deferoxamine.
Deferoxamine is a chelating agent that reduces the aluminium level.
This is given in infusion form.
IM injections also available.
Usual dose 500 to 1000 mg daily.
However, there are side effects like fungal infectio called mucormycosis and nerve toxicity.
So the benefits must be weighed against the side effects.
if you have several symptoms of aluminium toxicity, then this may be a viable option for you.
When I have an episode I slur my words and become agitated
this will go away with the treatment.
How serious are the side effects
mucor infection --generalized fungal infection or in the brain.
also hearing loss, vision loss.
These are not common but serious side effects.
Have you experienced treating aluminum poisoning with any patient and if you have has anyone been affected with mucor infection
Yes i have but only in patients with chronic kidney disease.
We try hemodialysis initially to remove excess aluminium.
The we use deferoxamine when aluminium level falls below 200.
This population is more at risk of side effects than otherwise normal individual.
I have seen 1-2% mucormycosis cases.
Unfortunately, the fatality was about 70%.
Mucormycosis is difficult to treat in vulnerable patients.
So this is a highly risky drug to take. How long are you required to take deforoxamine to rid your body on the aluminum
usually at least a month.
your risk of getting mucormycosis is lower than people with kidney disease
