My husband has been taking Morphine Sul 15mg ER Tab since his Stage IV lung cancer was diagnosed in May. Treatments have reduced the need for pain medication. Morphine messes with his thinking processes and we would like to discontinue it's use. How do we safely do that?

Hi there,
This is Dr. D.J., experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

It is great to hear your husband is responding well to the cancer treatment.
Morphine sul has to be discontinued slowly under his doctor's supervision.
He needs to stay on this dose every 12 hours for a week.
Then he can go down to once daily for one more week.
After that he may discontinue morphine sul ER tablets.
If needed morphine sul immediate release tablets can be used as needed basis for pain control in future.

Please also discuss with his doctor.

Best wishes
