Age 32 male. Had slightly elevated total bilirubin at 1.3

This answer was rated:

Age 32 male. Had slightly elevated total bilirubin at 1.3 mg/dl where the max is 1.2 at my lab. Additional information, ALT: 20 U/L and AST 22 U/L. Slightly elevated albumin at 5.3 g/dl where max is 5.1. My doctor didn't even mention anything about these findings to me upon examination. He said everything looks alright to him. I jog daily and try to eat well. Also take supplements daily for nutrition. Should these results be alarming?

Dr. Natasha :

hello

Dr. Natasha :

are you still there

Dr. Natasha :

No, I would not be alarmed by these findings.

Dr. Natasha :

There is a benign condition called Gilberts syndrome in which it is characterized by periods of elevated levels of a toxic substance called bilirubin in the blood

Dr. Natasha :

Now usually elevated bili means liver inflammation or disease, but in this case there is no disease

Dr. Natasha :

I suspect that may be what you have.

Dr. Natasha :

Usually it is found incidentally on labs.

Dr. Natasha :

And your other liver enzymes look good.

Dr. Natasha :

So I would not worry. This condition does not predispose you to liver disease either

Customer:

Thanks. There were also no traces of bilirubin found in the urine. I guess I should not look at reports unless the Dr. points something out. Otherwise I'm just scaring myself!

Dr. Natasha :

great.

Dr. Natasha :

yes I would not be concerned!

Dr. Natasha :

I hope that I provided you with excellent service?

Customer:

Yes and prompt. Much appreciated.
