I am a 65 year old woman who follows a strict vegetarian/Vegan diet. I recently had blood work done. My eGFR was 54. Is this serious and does this indicate CKD?
Hello. I'm Dr. Phil, licensed and practicing Internal Medicine Physician. Excellent service is my goal.

Thanks for this question

Do you take any medicines?

Drink alcohol or smoke?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I have never smoked; do not drink alcohol. I take meds to control blood pressure...was 106/65 today. Take med for hi cholesterol...under control. HDL 37; LDL 60.0

Thank you

What meds specifically?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Micardis HCT 80/25 1 x daily; Vytorin 10/40 1 x daily; also take Calcium Citrate + D 315 mg 2 x daily and Nexium 20 mg 1 x daily

We found the reason

The HCT component of micardis HCT is hydrochlorothiazide

It is a diuretic that stresses the kidneys and causes a drop in GFR

This should be changed to just micardis and use norvasc for additional BP control

I hope this helps. If you have more questions, just reply. :)
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

So Doc, Is Norvasc a different BP med? Do I request to my doctor that I just take micardis plus Norvasc or just either of them? Will this change the GFR? Does this mean I do or do not have stage three kidney disease? Does my diet have anything to do with the GFR drop? I really love this diet and I saw such a big change in my levels.

yes, it is. And it doesn't lower GFR

you will both because the HCT is going away

It will improve the GFR

No, you don't have kidney disease. The HCT is falsely lowering GFR
