This answer was rated:

I heard back from my ENT on what he observed in my throat - he said when he examined my throat I saw mild evidence of th laryngopharyngeal reflux int he past (mild swelling around the area of the esophageal sphincter).

As we discussed, I've had sinus drainage for about 3 weeks...whould this cause the mild swelling around the sphincter he noted? He looked in my throat using a mirror only.

Dr. Hasan :

HI, Thanks for your question. My name isXXXXX and I am here to help you today. I will be happy to help you with your follow-up questions also.

Dr. Hasan :

Yes mild swelling at this site can be caused by LPR but on the other hand it can be caused by sinus drainage.

Dr. Hasan :

The point is how to differentiate?

Dr. Hasan :

If rest of the throat is normal and the swelling is just at sphincter then yes LPR is possible.

Customer:

is this swelling of concern?

Customer:

either way

Customer:

if i had LPR i would have other symthoms?

Customer:

right?

Customer:

I did have a mild reflux episode Friday night while sleeping - the first in several months that i can remember

Customer:

or that i am aware of

Dr. Hasan :

No this swelling is not something to be worried for because it must be a smooth and diffuse swelling so no significance regarding anything serious.

Customer:

that is other symptoms...spelling issues

Dr. Hasan :

No it's not necessary to have other symptoms with LPR but usually hoarseness is there but not necessarily.

Dr. Hasan :

This one episode doesn't matter.

Dr. Hasan :

Even i get such episodes occasionally.

Customer:

No hoarseness....just the sinus drainage that we discussed

Dr. Hasan :

Sometime just your food can do this.

Dr. Hasan :

Yes i remember all details.

Customer:

in the middle of the night that awakens you with a burning sensation in your throat?

Dr. Hasan :

yes

Dr. Hasan :

i understand.

Customer:

you have that too?

Dr. Hasan :

It's just the reflux that comes up, many a times due to heavy meal or due to sleeping just after meal.

Customer:

yes

Dr. Hasan :

Yes sometime, but i know that sometime is normal.

Customer:

Would I have symptoms with Barret's Escophagus

Dr. Hasan :

OHHHHHHHHH, you are thinking too bad :)

Customer:

yes

Customer:

my mind goes places it shouldn't

Dr. Hasan :

Definitely yes you should have full blown symptoms with barret.

Dr. Hasan :

This is not something i will even think for in your case.

Customer:

thanks

Dr. Hasan :

:)

Dr. Hasan :

Your stomach is not too bad but you are giving a continuous tension to it by thing bla bla bla :)

Customer:

I feel find with the exception of the sinus drainage - which I've had for a couple of weeks

Dr. Hasan :

by thinking bla bla bla

Customer:

My stomach - yes

Customer:

It feels fine - I believe anyway

Dr. Hasan :

Sinus drainage needs treatment but nothing in your case should be attributed to anything serious.

Dr. Hasan :

Yes i believe too that you are perfectly fine.

Customer:

if my worrying / thinking / tension were causing stomach issues what would i see / feel

Dr. Hasan :

Actually stress increases acid reflux.

Dr. Hasan :

You feel stressed and you come up with acid reflux.

Customer:

reflux that you feel

Dr. Hasan :

Yes

Customer:

not silent reflix

Dr. Hasan :

One can have episodes of both silent and reflux that one can feel.

Dr. Hasan :

Feeling reflux sometime is normal and has no significance.

Customer:

I don't understand the silent reflux - how can you have this and not feel it

Dr. Hasan :

That is why it is called silent.

Customer:

when it happens to me in the middle of the night - i definitely feel it - it's like a choking feeling

Dr. Hasan :

If you feel it then it is not silent.

Customer:

i dont have a lot of heartburn - I have it, but not that much at all

Dr. Hasan :

Have you elevated your head end?

Customer:

So can you have both silent and the one you feel

Customer:

yes

Customer:

2 pillows and the bed

Dr. Hasan :

yes

Dr. Hasan :

it is possible.

Customer:

how much should you elevate the bed in inches?

Dr. Hasan :

but i think you don't have silent reflux, if you don't have hoarseness.

Dr. Hasan :

2 inch at least.

Customer:

i do not

Customer:

ok

Dr. Hasan :

You should not feel odd.

Dr. Hasan :

Just elevate till you feel ok.

Customer:

i ask my wife every morning - she says i have the said stupid voice as the day we met

Customer:

ok

Customer:

I cough up a lot of sinus "stuff" every morning - have for a very long time - can't remember not doing this especially in the fall months

Dr. Hasan :

Voice has to be hoarse daily in morning with LPR.

Customer:

no voice issues

Dr. Hasan :

Yes sinus stuff can be equally responsible.

Dr. Hasan :

Yes i know that you don't have.

Customer:

sinus stuff can be equally responsible for?

Dr. Hasan :

minor voice change

Customer:

yes

Customer:

I feeling the sinus drainage running down my throat as we talk

Customer:

chat

Dr. Hasan :

ok

Dr. Hasan :

Yes sinus drainage is also contributing here.

Dr. Hasan :

Have you started the remedy?

Customer:

Yes...the one you gave me

Customer:

from your lab...

Customer:

: )

Dr. Hasan :

no prepared in your lab :)

Customer:

: )

Dr. Hasan :

instructed from my home pharmacy

Dr. Hasan :

LOL

Customer:

Based on what you know - is there any need for follow-up / additional work-ups?

Dr. Hasan :

NOT AT ALL.

Dr. Hasan :

I assure you

Customer:

I got concerned with the swelling he noted

Dr. Hasan :

You don't have swallowing difficulty so that swelling has no significance.

Customer:

i do not - correct

Dr. Hasan :

Significant swelling should cause swallowing problems.

Dr. Hasan :

yes

Customer:

he didn't say if my entire throat had inflammation, but it is sore from the drainage

Dr. Hasan :

ok

Customer:

is inflammation and swelling the same thing?

Dr. Hasan :

to some extent yes.

Dr. Hasan :

inflammation leads to swelling

Customer:

makes sense

Dr. Hasan :

:)

Customer:

I will try to let it go...relax and not worry about it

Dr. Hasan :

Yes i suggest the same to you my dear :)

Customer:

thanks so much for the way you explain things - it really really really helps

Dr. Hasan :

You are most welcome.

Dr. Hasan :

My pleasure

Customer:

No worries - right?

Dr. Hasan :

HAHA

Dr. Hasan :

Definitely no worries.

Customer:

Thank you

Customer:

Have a good day.
