is somome there?
do you have an answer for me?
what is it?
are you taking statin and how far along you are pregnant?
Please be patient as the replies do not post instantly in the chat window.
I am currently not yet pregnant. I have taken the stain for 4 yrs since my husband passed of a heart attack. I had high cholestorol and Dr. thought it was a way to keep me from having the same fate as my husband.
statins should be discontinued before getting pregnant.
As per animal studies, there is risk of teratogenecity
that means congenital defects.
for how long should they be discontinued? and what is teratogenecity?
But, human studies did not show any congenital anomalies.
The risk is small.
please clarify congenital ? in lay man's terms
inborn defects --mainly nervous system and muscles defects.
But the risk is very small.
Statin should be discontinued as soon as you plan to become pregnant.
Even if you come to know about your pregnant, there will not be immediate harm.
Statin can be discontinued as that time.
There is no need to treat the cholesterol during pregnancy.

Do you have any further question?
Why do u not need to treat cholesterol during prenancy? I had a wonderful healthy pregnancy @ 40 and a natural delivery. I was 9 cm. when i got to the hospital and my daughter was born in 1 hr and 20 mins. What are some of the risks of getting pregnant at age 49? I know i can do an amnio. will that tell all?
because as per the studies, not trating cholesterol during pregnancy does not cause any long term complications heart wise.
is this crazy to consider getting pregnant at this late age?
The risk of down's, autism increases with older age pregnancy but still well below 1%
So not that risky.
below 1%, that"s way lower than I thought. I have brouched the subject w/ my family dr. he seems to think this is a time for me and my friend to enjoy ourselves rather than rear a brood. I feel good and wonder if one good pregnancy will be a forcast for the next. I worry about complications. I do have an 8 yr old i need to raise
I understand your concerns.
Since you are healthy, and past pregnancy was unremarkable, the chances of complication are still low.
Close monitoring is all that is required.
The question is whether you will get pregnant or not since you are close to menopause.
do you have any suggestions that i weigh against my thoughts? will i be able to test for downs and austism with the amnio? I have started what the dr. calls peri menopause, not regular menses, last month I had a reg period. I ovulate right after my period is that correct?
The ovulation does not occur regularly when your period becomes irregular.
the ovulation occurs at the mid cucle about 2 weeks before your period in a 28 day cycle.
Yes, amnio can tell about down's, autism etc accurately.
oh 2 wks before who knows what. that sounds like that is the issue here. since i am not sure when that will be should i do ovulation testing? over the counter?
Yes you should --over the counter is fine.
Getting pregnant will be a big achievement for you--complications are not that of worries.
are there any issues with taking vitamins? I currently take coQ 10 which i take w/simvastain which I will stop w/ the simvastain. I also take d3_200 mgs,& b6 100mgs
multivitamins are ok to take.
Prenantal vitamins are recommended.
So getting pregnant will be the challenge here? because my eggs are probably about 100 yrs old now.
take folic acid 1 mg daily
if you get pregnant, then things will be easy to manage.
I did 4 rounds of IVF to have my daughter, and finally had to use donor sperm
then I am not sure if this is going to happen naturally this time
Please remember, your partner needs to have healthy sperm count.
I was not the problem my husband had hernia surgey that resulted in a vasectomy
oh ok --
then you may have better luck this time if your partner is ok.
my partner has had a past pregnancy and so have i, that have not resulted in a live birth
that suggests possible chromosomal anomaly.
You seem like such a nice and kind dr. thank you sdo much for your patience
But that may not happen every time.
you may turn lucky this time --it is not difficult.
no they were aborted unfortunatley
ok --that may happen sometimes.
still odds are in your favor albeit with some risks.
the riskd being autism and downs sydrome?
yes correct and also risk of abortion.
you mean I could get pregnant and fetus will abort itself? if it is not viable?
yes correct --usually first trimester or first 8 weeks are important.
so misscarriage is hughe here?
If the fetus survives that period, then your chances are great to complete the pregnancy.
do you hear of people my age starting families? not too often i imagine?
not that common --but I have had patients getting pregnant successfully.
This is something that may not be explained by science fully.
it does seem a little crazy, i feel like i just started way too late. Thank u so much for sahring your knowledge with me. you seems like a very nice dr. what state do you practice in/
I am in NYC
one more question before u go. if I voluntarily stop the zocor while trying to get pregnant how risky is that to my health now? I am also in NY, actually Long island, delivered my daughter in Long Island jewish hospitla and did fertility thru columbia presbyterian w/ Harry Fisch and Genesis Fertility in Diker Height Bklyn
oh --good to know
how high is your cholesterol?
it was below 300 before I started. asked the dr. about getting off it and he said he felt better w/ me on it
ok --not that high.
Do you know your LDL?
it is now HDL68 Trig113
does that make sense trying to read his handwriting?
yes it does.
Your LDL is good.
And your HDl is very good.
So, you do not need zocor that much.
is ldl the really important #? and what is the range on that?
Your number overall looks good.
yes LDL is very important.
what is the normal range on that?
Without any hypertension or diabetes or heart disease, the LDL should be around 130 or below.
I have none of those other factors. I am do to have a fasting blood test in Dec, should I stop the zocor now to get an accurate reading of wher I am at?
I will be trying to get pregnant soon
I think you can stop zocor but do discuss with your doctor also.
Your current numbers are not a risk factor for heart disease.
so I should be calling him before i stop?
yes you should since I am not your doctor.
It is better to inform your prescriber.
ok Thank you so much you input and information has been so very helpful. you made me feel comfortable about even thinking about a preganacy at this age
