Is it okay to take advil with xanax? I was given 0.25mg of

Resolved Question:

Is it okay to take advil with xanax? I was given 0.25mg of Xanax to address my trouble breathing and tightness of chest, and took half of that last night (I weigh 154lbs). Is it okay to take these two together, and is it okay to take albuterol as well?

Dr. Cameron :

hello

Dr. Cameron :

What kind of problems to you have breathing?

Dr. Cameron :

DO you have sleep apnea?

Customer:

Hello

Customer:

I have asthma

Customer:

But yesterday and the day before I felt like I was having a prolonged attack and couldnt breathe

Customer:

Albuterol didnt help

Customer:

Went to my physician and he said i had no wheezing or anything

Dr. Cameron : any recent steriods?
Customer:

And believes part of the issue is anxiety

Customer:

Yes im taking beclomethosone

Customer:

80mcg

Dr. Cameron : ok
Dr. Cameron : do you use a home nebulizer?
Customer:

no

Customer:

i asked my doc about it

Customer:

he said he didnt think it was necessary

Dr. Cameron : well the issue with using xanax is if this is related to your asthma, you can make yourself worse
Customer:

why is that?

Dr. Cameron : because you decrease the respiratory drive
Dr. Cameron : and this can make you hypoxic
Dr. Cameron : you are breathing fast for a reason
Dr. Cameron : have you seen a pulmonologist?
Customer:

it's not that im breathing 'fast'

Customer:

I just have tightness of chest and feel like im not able to get a deep breath

Dr. Cameron : that sounds like an asthma attack or stress
Dr. Cameron : have you seen a pulmonary doc?
Customer:

my doctor wanted to try 2 days on the xanax

Customer:

see if it had any impact

Customer:

and then refer me to pulmonologist

Dr. Cameron : did ithelp?
Customer:

i only took 1/8th of a mg last night and i felt better

Customer:

but i also had a massage

Customer:

and relaxing evening

Dr. Cameron :

Well, generally the procedure is to make sure this is NOT asthma before giving you the xanax

Dr. Cameron :

And referral to the pulmonary doc should have been first

Dr. Cameron :

because if this is untreated or undertreated asthma, the last thing you want to give is the xanax?

Customer:

well i believe he made that recommendation

Customer:

based on the fact that i had taken beclomethosone

Customer:

and the albuterol

Customer:

no wheezing but still had tightness of chest

Dr. Cameron :

you can have tightness of the chest in an asthma attack too

Customer:

thereby suggesting stress/anxiety as a major driver

Customer:

youre saying just because he heard no wheezing or anything

Customer:

doesnt mean i wasnt having an attack?

Dr. Cameron : that is correct
Dr. Cameron : it means your asthma is bad and you are not moving air well enough to have wheezing
Customer:

well im not sure what to do then

Customer:

im OK as of right now

Dr. Cameron : that is good
Customer:

and i definitely felt better after coming home from the doc

Customer:

and relaxing

Dr. Cameron : well, in regards XXXXX XXXXX question
Customer:

and not becoming anxious over it

Dr. Cameron : you can take advil with xanxas
Dr. Cameron : *xanax
Dr. Cameron : You can take albuterol with the xanax
Dr. Cameron : but I still think that you need to follow up with the pulmonary doc to make sure that your asthma is under total control
Customer:

yes tomorrow i have an appt with my physician for follow up

Dr. Cameron : but if you get really tight and you take the albuterol and then a xanax and no help, go to the ER riight away, ok?
Customer:

and i will tell him id like to be referred to pulmonologist

Dr. Cameron : does that sound good?
Customer:

yes sounds good

Dr. Cameron : great
Customer:

also quick question

Customer:

sorry

Dr. Cameron : sure
Customer:

at 155lbs what is the minimum effective dose?

Customer:

like i took 1/2 of a 0.25mg xanax

Dr. Cameron : ha ha depends on the person
Dr. Cameron : I have seen 70 pound women pop 3 of them with little effect
Dr. Cameron : the minimum effective dose is what works for you
Dr. Cameron : so if 1/2 did the trick, that is your minimum effective dose
Customer:

i honestly could not say i felt much different

Customer:

but became tired a bit earlier than normal

Dr. Cameron : well then take an entire one- you are supposed to feel relaxed
Customer:

ok

Customer:

thanks so much for your help and analysis

Dr. Cameron : you are welcome
Dr. Cameron : I hope that I provided you with excellent service? :-)?
Customer:

most definitely

Customer:

i will follow up if necessary

Dr. Cameron : great please dp
Customer:

enjoy your day
