Are you familiar with the two forms of B12 that are being sold?
Most seems to be in the cyanocobalamin form. I just read that the methylcobalamin form is superior to the former, as the former is combined with a cyanide molecule. If so, why would one want to
risk taking a form with something as toxic as cyanide, if even in a
small dose?

Welcome, as an Internist I will try to answer your Medical Question, for informational purposes only, please see your doctor as needed.

neuromd2012 :

methylcobalamine is superior to cyanocobalamine , but not because of the cyano group We actually make cyanide in our bodies, this is all at very small levels, and is not an issue. But methylcobalamine is much different in terms of transport across the blood brain barrier, so it gets into brain better, and is part of the S adenosyl-methionine metabolism in the brain, which is important in energy metabolism.

Customer:

Thanks. Do you know if the cyanobalamine form is bioavailable on any level? It seems to be the cheaper form, so probably why it's used so often in formulations. I think I'll dump the supplement with this form.

neuromd2012 :

hang on

neuromd2012 :

this is what I suggest with my patients that have MCI (minimal cognitive impairment)

neuromd2012 :

it is called Cerefolin NAC

neuromd2012 :

it has methylcobalamine, and methylfolate

neuromd2012 :

and supplements the SAM metabolic pathway in the brain

neuromd2012 :

neuromd2012 :

I am here if you have questions ok?

Customer:

Cool. I'm assuming this is over the counter....yes?

neuromd2012 :

no

neuromd2012 :

unfortunately, it is FDA approved as a"brain food" or nutritional supplement

neuromd2012 :

but they said only with a prescription, at least in most states

neuromd2012 :

you can call your pharmacist and ask

neuromd2012 :

and it is expensive also I think

Customer:

Hmmm. I'll bet that means spendy, but will call and ask.

neuromd2012 :

the company is really small, they sent me some samples

neuromd2012 :

right

neuromd2012 :

that is the problem

neuromd2012 :

it might be pricey

neuromd2012 :

you could contact the company and ask for some samples,

neuromd2012 :

they might send some to you, seriously

Customer:

Thanks. Will do.

neuromd2012 :
