Hi. My twin brother and I both have the Thalassemia trait.

This answer was rated:

Hi. My twin brother and I both have the Thalassemia trait. We both had CBC differentials and we both have the same abnormal findings: low wbc, high rdw, low mch, low mcv and I have slightly high rbc. My CMP was fine. My brother was sent to a hematologist and was told this is consistent with Thalassemia, no further testing. My doctor is concerned about my wbc. I am in good health, workout daily and have a vegetarian diet. I am worried about this, would most blood cancers have a low rbc not high like mine? Does Thalassemia cause the wbc to be abnormal?
Thanks for your help.
Hello from JA
Please tell me what the wbc is exactly
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

2.8

OK
And do you have any other readings to compare
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Back in 2009 it was 3.4. I was 10 pounds heavier then and my diet was different. I do work out extensively now - don't know if that matters.

OK
No I don't think this is anything insidious.
As long as you have no other white cell or lymph abnormalities, we see this.
If you get infected your white cells will increase just like anyone elses.

I would not be concerned unless it continues to drop.

Forgot to mention that neutrophils were low, does that change things?

No.
Those are part of the regular white count.

Hi again. I have a follow up question. How much time do I give myself to check my wbc again to see if there is a drop or only if I am not feeling well?

Thanks!
