Which part of the stomach you have the pain and for how long?
Do you have any nausea, vomiting or change in bowel habits?
Hi, this is an issue that happens once every 6 months or so. Its in the top part of the stomach abdominal area. I had it last week and I feel its about to happen again
Its very intense abdominal pain, Ive been to the Emergency room, and to my doctor and no one has provided an answer
did you have any abdominal scan done?
what tests have been done so far?
yes, nothing came up out of that, no stones or anything
from my experience its being caused by food, but it seems the foods are very different when it happens
any endoscopy so far?
the first time it happened, it happened with a large latte and a breakfast sandwich
no, no endoscopy
it usually happens with lactose foods but not always
ok lactose intolerance can definitely cause this.
However, there can be gastric ulcer as well.
very intense vomiting
H pylori infection is another possibility
to where I cant even drink water
it lasts about 8-10 hours of pain
Another possibility can be nonfunctioning gallbladder which is not checked by ultrasound or ct scan
only a nuclear medicine HIDA scan can show this
An upper GI endoscopy should be considered.
Meanwhile, you need to adhere to the dietary restrictions and maintain a food diary
if this is caused by lactose foods, is there any over the counter i can take to control the pain?
Lactase enzymes can be tried
however, lactose free diet is the best option.
can lactose foods create severe bloating to where this severe pain is caused?
also loose stools.
ok so today I just ate a salad with steak, a bit of cheese, low fat ranch, and a bit of corn and beans
but I am feeling the same simptoms
but there are days where I eat a lot more "dairy" food and it has not happened
may vary with cheese type sometimes.
It may be possible that you may be allergic to the fermented products like cheese.
A food allergy testing can be tried
other than the enzymes is there anything else I can try>
there are digestive enzyme preparations available in health food stores.
to eliminate the bloating and possibly the pain
This can be tried before meals
also a probiotic like Phillip's colon health will help with the bloating.
Avoid too much fiber in the diet.
And cook the meat well
the pain usually starts very mild and progressively gets worse
Also simethicone ( GasX) tablets may help with gas
can occur with gas pain
but when I went to the ER they just prescribed antinausea
ok --they may also help like reglan
so I dont know what do to suppress the pain. Ive already taken Gasx and Lactose enzymes today
are you talking about probiotics
you can try a digestive enzyme preparation.
probiotics yes --and different from digestive enzymes
so those 2 are different?
the one I bought today is Schiff lactose defense Formula
ok that is good also
A digestive enzyme preparation also contains amylase, lipase, papain
do you still recommend for me to take some additional digestive enzymes?
yes that should be helpful.
Also beano--to help digest the dietary fibers.
how long does all this take to have effect. Or do you think its too late since im already getting the symptoms
the stomach pain is already at like a 4
out of 10
digestive enzymes should help within 15-20 minutes.
For now, you can also try an antacid like Gaviscon or Peptobismol.
They may also help with the gas related pain.
I bought prylosec last time it happened
which was actually last week
thats why I am seeking more information about this, because before that it was about 6 months ago
did you see any benefit
Prilosec does not act immediately.
I would say no on the prylosec
That is why a liquid antacid will be better
Ive taken pepto bismol before for this problem and I just end up throwing it up
That is in addition to Gas X
how many gas X tablets you have taken so far?
you can take 2 more also.
and in your case, probably digestive enzyme will help more.
another thing is I have kind of dry mouth right now too
and of course you need to modify your diet
that is possible from the gas related nerve reflex.
do you have any digestive enzyme recommendation that I can go buy at CVS?
also I took 1 laxative tablet
should I take another lactose defense pill?
you can look for Nature's Bounty Digest 13 Bio-Active Multi-Enzyme Complex Capsules
yes you can take another lactose defense pill also
I dont know if I should take another laxative though
no need to take laxative
I wanna get whatever is making me have this pain out of my system as fast as possible, but even throwing it all up doesnt help
it is the effect on the stomach that remains for sometime
ok so other than those 2 things, should I still take the beano?
yes beano helps with the fibers like salad
what about for the actual pain, is there anything that will help relief that?
tylenol can be tried for pain as such.
There is a medication called dicyclomine that helps this type of pain but requires prescription
do you recommend taking water or not since I will more than likely throw everything up eventually
also I understand yoghurts can help as a probiotic but not sure since its a dairy
water is good--Mint tea is better which helps with bloating
instead of yogurt, probiotic pills will be better
Phillip's colon health is one such brand available in cvs
Ok, Im going on a run to CVS. Can I consult with you if anything additional comes up or how does this work?
yes you can
you can always request for me.

ok before I go, just wanted to recap, the 5 times this has happened some kind of lactose food has been involved. Coffee with milk, chocolate milk, mozzarela sticks, salad with sour cream and cheese, and today it was just a bit of cheese and ranch. Other than that, some of the other things Ive eating have been chicken, steak, fake eggs - like the powder ones. and from the symptoms, would you say its more based on the lactose or maybe animal proteins?
lactose is more likely
Im just really running out of options because Ive been to the doctor several times and he hasnt been able to determine what it is to a point where it is almost a waste of time to go
I understand your frustration.
Better to see a gastroenterologist for endoscopy.
And also consider getting a food allergy testing.
also, my mom had similar pains a few years ago, something called gastralgia in spanish? do you know what that is?
Well this is more akin to migraine.
Also known as abdominal migraine.
The cause is unknown but some people get it without any known abdominal conditions.
so probably different than this pain that I have, correct?
Oh, one more thing. I dont know if it is relevant or not, but I drink a lot, a lot of club sodas, perrier, pellegrino, etc. I tried to cut out sodas and drink these instead. Could this be the cause?
yes you should avoid soda
they release carbon dioxide gas form in the stomach
can cause problems.
normal still water is better
but could this be causing the pain? or change something in my body that triggered this series of pains?
no the soda itself can cause pain.
ok, well thanks for the help.I will try these medicines that you recommended
