I was diagnosed by my doctor with bronchitis. I told her that whenever I eat food or drink fluids, it hurts alot in my chest. She said thats normal. I never heard of that with bronchitis. Is that a normal thing? If so, what causes it?

Mysticdoc :

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

Mysticdoc :

Do you have any cough or shortness of breath?

Customer:

yes a cough producing clear mucus

Mysticdoc :

and when does your chest hurt during coughing?

Customer:

when coughing, breathing in deep, as well as eating or drinking. The eating and drinking concerned me the most.

Mysticdoc :

do you have any heart burn or acid reflux?

Customer:

see Im not sure. Not normally, but I have gotten heartburn in the past from time to time. I did have a low grade fever for a couple of days when this started.

Mysticdoc :

ok

Mysticdoc :

probably you do have bronchitis.

Mysticdoc :

Now if this is bacterial infection, antibiotic will help.

Mysticdoc :

Steroid is used to reduce the inflammation in your airways.

Mysticdoc :

and both these medications can worsen your acid reflux.

Mysticdoc :

Hence, omeprazole available over the counter can be considered 20 mg daily for a week or two.

Mysticdoc :

also an antacid like Gaviscon, or Maalox should be helpful before meals.

Mysticdoc :

So far, it does not sound concerning.

Mysticdoc :

Once your cough and mucus get better, your recovery will be fast.

Mysticdoc :

the pain also will subside.

Customer:

so is it normal with bronchitis to have chest pain when eating and drinking?

Mysticdoc :

yes it is

Mysticdoc :

but do not worry

Mysticdoc :

you can follow the above suggestions after discussing with your doctor.

Customer:

oh ok. I was worrying a little, as I tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac haha. You suggested things for acid reflux. You think this could be part of the problem also?

Mysticdoc :

yes I think so

Mysticdoc :

do not worry

Mysticdoc :

you should improve

Customer:

Ok doctor Thank you.

Mysticdoc :

very welcome

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,
