Thyroid

Resolved Question:

Hi, I have recently had a spinal fusion. I also have Hashimoto's for the past twenty years. Since having my surgery I have had a racing heart over 110bpm at rest; low BP; dizziness; tachycardia, innapropriate anxieties / no reason; hot sweats; blurred vision; noise and light sensitivity; brain fog and bouts of depression. Do you think the surgery / anaesthetics may have caused problems with my thyroid? I have just heard of Hashitoxicosis and that inflammation can be a trigger / I'm sure I have a lot of inflammation from the surgery. What are you professional thoughts? Many thanks, Kylie

Hello,

I can appreciate your concern.

Yes, you are right, Hashimoto's can be reactivated during any period of stress to the body and this can cause thyroid toxicity.

Your symptoms are all quite coincident with thyroid toxicity.

Checking your TSH, T3, T4, FT4 is needed.

Discuss with your doctor. If thyroid hormones are high, this needs to be treated so that you can recover from these problems.

Hi, If it is Hashitoxicosis, do I need to check the antibodies? I was under the impression that thyroid levels can come back normal, but the antibodies in particular TSI would be high? Thanks

Hello,

Yes, for a diagnosis of Hashimoto's antibody tests would be needed.

But since you are symptomatic now, it would be expected that your thyroid hormones would be high. Otherwise Hashimoto's would not be the cause of the symptoms. If Hashimoto's is positive but thyroid hormones are normal, then it would cause the symptoms of pain in the thyroid region and swelling, but not the symptoms of thyroid toxicosis that you are having. Hence I advised checking the thyroid hormones first. Thyroid hormones may be raised not just due to Hashimoto's but also due to other causes like Grave's disease, 'hot' thyroid nodule, etc.

At a second stage, if your thyroid hormones are high, tests to find out the cause including Hashimoto's would need to be done - this includes TSI, TPOab, Thyroglobulin and Ultrasound of the thyroid gland.

Hope that helps. Discuss this with your doctor.

Hi, after surgery my thyroid levels have come back within normal reference range, which is why I was asking about Hasitoxicosis (symptoms of under / with bursts of over) rather than Hashimoto's. I have always been hypo with my Hashimotos, but most of my symptoms are hyper now. My thyroid is swollen and sore too. Can my levels be normal and still causing these smyptoms? thanks

If your thyroid is swollen and sore, then this might be Hashitoxicosis.

Your levels would be raised to cause these symptoms, but what happens in Hashitoxicosis is that levels remain normal or low but there are short bursts of release of excess hormones, which are rarely or never caught on tests. So when you do the thyroid tests it seems normal each time, or under.

Best to get the tests done then - TSI, TPOab, Thyroglobulin and Ultrasound of the thyroid gland.
