I have just been told that I have diverticulitis how do I control my diarrhea
Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and am ready to help.

I see you have tried immodium to try to control your diarrhea.

you can also keep a food diary and avoid foods which worsen your diarrhea

you might try avoiding milk products or wheat products and see if that helps.

you can try to eat more constipating foods like bananas or cheese or rice

you might need stronger prescription medications to help control diarrhea like lomotil or cholestyramine which is used to help diarrhea.

you might need a colonoscopy to look inside of your colon.

you might need medications to stop bowel spasms like bentyl or donnatal. these medications are used for patients who have irritable bowel syndrome.

have you just had a colonoscopy?

have you been tested for celiac spruce disorder which is a sensitivity to wheat glutten? you should have this test if you are having diarrhea.

have you had your stools tested for blood and for c difficile toxin? this should also be done.

I had a colonoscopy which indicated no polyps, yet diverticulitis.

I eat some cheese & bananas. I am diabetic Type II.

I have not been tested for occult blood or C.Diff.

are you having diarrhea?

diverticulosis and diarrhea is a tough problem. as you know, you don't want to get too constipated which can cause hard small stools and this can worsen your diverticulosis.

sometimes increasing the fiber content in your diet by eating more natural fiber or adding fiber supplements like metamucil or fibercon or citrucel fiber can help bulk up your stool and keep you more regular with more normal bowel movements.

if your diarrhea continues, ask your doctor to have your stools tested for c diff toxin

or see if you might benefit from irritable bowel syndrome type medications for your colon.

does this help?
