My sibling is in end stage alcoholism, liver disease, etc (30+years).

Resolved Question:

My sibling is in end stage alcoholism, liver disease, etc (30+years). She drinks heavily every day and eats very little and lately almost nothing. She has fallen twice in the last several weeks (falling is a common occurrence) and has to be helped up. She has life alert and they call her contacts regularly. Since the last two falls she has not bounced back to her original state prior to these. She sounds very slurred on phone (I live in another country very far away), is somewhat lucid but very angry, and totally resistant to anything that might improve her situation. She simply drinks heavily likely from the time she wakes up to bedtime. As her appetite has gone since the falls and only just agreed to go to the doctor a full week from now, how long could this go on? Could this endless state of inebriation, no eating and extreme frailty, continue for a long time? I read about wet brain syndrome and she definitely exhibits signs of this. I am just wondering what sort of time frame I am dealing with.

Hello,

Mysticdoc :

Thanks for your question.

Mysticdoc :

Sorry to hear about your sibling's condition.

Mysticdoc :

Given her circumstances, it seems she has injured her brain from falls.

Mysticdoc :

There can be stroke as well.

Mysticdoc :

Intracranial hemorrhage is also a possibility.

Mysticdoc :

These conditions can affect the personality making her more aggressive.

Mysticdoc :

Definitely she is in her terminal stages.

Mysticdoc :

But, body can be resilient defying logic sometimes.

Mysticdoc :

Usually less than a year is the average time frame for end stage liver disease.

Mysticdoc :

But, things can improve a bit with proper care and nursing.

Mysticdoc :

She should be admitted to the hospital for proper evaluation if possible.

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,

How has she injured her brain exactly? Could mini strokes be causing her falls? Maybe this also increases her slurs. She said she is weaker on one side of her body as well. Can you have repeated mini strokes of minimal significance? She speaks of pain, being in pain and is totally nonspecific of where pain is when I try to pinpoint it. She also speaks of having to have a protracted stool every morning last at least an hour.

From the falls the brain injury is more likely.
Also alcohol can cause direct damage to the brain.
Yes repeated mini strokes also are possible, but chances are she may have had a significant stroke.
The stool problem is likely from the liver disease.
