Diagonsed with shingles and have swollen armpit glands

This answer was rated:

i was diagonsed with shingles and i have swollen armpit glands (primarily the left) ) my doctor did a mammogram and sonagram all cam back negative..all my bloodwork was perfect she said except i tested positive for shingles. Is it odd that i still have the swollen glands? i was diagnosed too late for antiviral drugs according to my doctor

Swollen glands indicate infection and may take an extended amount of time to heal. As your body heals the infection, your glands will heal also.

How long can shingles take to heal? I am not in a great deal of pain. Is is normal for the glands to ache occasionally ?

There is no cure for shingles, however it's symptoms are manageable with prescription antiviral drugs that can speed healing and reduce your risk of complications.

These medications include:

  • Acyclovir (Zovirax)
  • Valacyclovir (Valtrex)
  • Famciclovir (Famvir)

Shingles can cause severe pain, so your doctor may prescribe:

  • Anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin (Neurontin)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline
  • Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, delivered via a cream, gel, spray or skin patch
  • Medications that contain narcotics, such as codeine
