Customer Question

Three weeks ago I was experiencing head pressure. I would awake at night with the pressure traveling from both side of my neck up too the temple area. ! week ago I woke up with pressure on the right side of head and then all right side of head with tingly. I went to the ER and they ran a cat scan, they found nothing abnormal. The next day I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a severe sinus congestion. I was given doxycycline hyclate 100mg x 2 capsule a day. I started taking them on 07/10/2012 and was told to discontinue on 07/16/2012. I was feeling really week and would get pressure in the lower rear of my head and heart would speed up. If I would stand and move, heart would speed up faster. Episodes lasted for 30-40 minutes. Also, that same part of hear would seat. I was also feeling pain in lower back. I have been having nasal discharge, mostly thick clear mucus. I also have been spitting light yellow mucus(phlegm). They gave me a blood lab report. I'm curious. The blood labs on 07/13/2012 said my Eosinophil was 5.6 (normal ranges state 0.00 -5.00) and my ast (sgot) was 13 (normal ranges 20-57). When I went to the ER on the 07/16/2012, my blood labs said Eosinophil was 5.8 (normal ranges state 0.00 -5.00) It wet up.2. Also my glucose was 105 (normal 94-99) and my RDW was 14.4 (I know the normal range went to 14.00). What's happening to me? I'm looking for a primary physician now. Be advise the doc said I also have ringworm on my feet and I'm using cream for that now.

Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and am ready to help.

slighly elevated eosinophil percentage is from an allergy reaction your body is having. I think most likely you are having summer allergies which have turned into a sinus infection. to battle this, you took a course of antibiotics, and now you have to treat the allergy to keep the runny nose and congested sinus from coming back. there are over the counter allergy medications like allegra, zyrtec, claritin, benadryl, but you might need stronger prescription allergy medications as well. best to talk to your new primary care doctor about what allergy medications might be best for you. I would not worry about the low AST liver enzyme level. that is fine.

Dr. David,

Why was my RDW elevated 14.4? The lab sheet reads my results exceeded normal ranges by .4 -What would cause that. Why would my eosinophil go up .2 in 2 days if I'm on anitbiotics? If eosinophil normal range is 0.00 - 5.00 -, how high is 5.8?

RDW is red cell distribution width.

RDW is only one measure of red cell size.

other measures is MCV or mean corpuscular volume which is a more accurate measure of the size of your red cells.

if the MCV is normal, then your red cells most likely are normal size.
