My husband had a torn rotator cuff and torn bicep muscle that was reattached with surgery in May. He is in alot of pain, and cannot stay asleep most nights. His orthopedic surgeon has prescribed Oxycodone, and also Ambien to help him sleep, but now has wanted him to ease off of those, especially the Oxycodone. He was also prescribed Meloxicam, an antinflammatory, but he says it does nothing for the pain. He would like to know if he can take Aleve for the pain, especially at night so the pain does not wake him up every hour? Please advise if anything over the counter would help with the pain, especially Aleve, which has helped him in the past, before the surgery.
Hi, I'm Doctor Robert, a Medical Internist (MD) who specializes in diseases of all major organ systems. All my education has been completed in the US. If this is an emergency, stop now and please call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest Emergency Room. Aleve can help. Diclofenac gel applied topically can also help.Other non-narcotic medications are tramadol and toradol. Both are VERY effective for this type of pain.Just be sure to watch for stomach upset; this can be decreased with a full glass of water when taking the medication.=========== Please remember to only rate my answer when you are 100% satisfied. Thanks for providing me with credit for my assistance! However, I noticed you left GOOD versus EXCELLENT SERVICE feedback. I was wondering what else I could have told you, or information you wanted to know, in order to completely satisfy you? I'm always looking for ways to improve my responses so that I can provide the best service possible (e.g. an EXCELLENT SERVICE rating) for all my JA.com customers. Follow up questions are always welcome! Thank you, Customer
Can Diclofenac gel be purchased over the counter?
I always write it as a prescription so patients get it covered by their insurance plan.but I do believe it is available over the counter (OTC: Voltaren). If you call your pharmacy, they'll know. I don't buy many medications!41109.598003125
