Thank you for the input. There are different causes of vertigo. It can be due to inner ear cause like inflammation or labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease. Decreased blood supply to certain part of brain, cerebellar disease of the brain, stroke etc can be a cause. When it has developed acutely, he needs to have an urgent examination by doctor in ER. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo which is due to displacement of crystals in the inner ear is quite common. Treatment consists of repositioning of the particles displaced in the inner ear. But with sudden onset, vomiting etc other causes need to be ruled out. He can need CT scan or other tests. If you have any query, please feel free to ask. what is Meniere's disease?
The exact cause of meniere's disease is not known. It can be due change in fluid level in the ear causing symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, hearing loss etc.
Is there anything we can do at home, until he goes to his doctor?
Some medicines may help to reduce the symptoms like meclizine, diphenhydramine but if there is a brain issue like stroke, it should be managed urgently. I feel he should take an urgent examination.
