It could be a hemorrhoid, but it could also be a fissure..a split in the skin which can also be hidden just inside.

The treatment for these is the same initially.

You can use the preparation wipes but lidocaine cream is probably more effective.

Sit in a hot bath for 20 minutes 2 to 4 times a day.

Make sure the stool is completely soft,, using stool softeners.

Eat a mostly vegetarian diet. This provides the soluble fiber needed.

Drink a lot of water.

I should also point out that at age 50 you are due colon screening with colonoscopy which is good for 10 years if you do this.....so you could get two things done at once...screening but also a direct look at this problem.

If this does not clear up in a week have your doctor look at it. A very short scope can be used to visualize.
