I am having trouble with my Esophagus swallowing foods feeling like I am going to choke. My throat feels swollen and narrow. After eating for a few minutes, I really have to concentrate on swallowing. I especially have trouble eating soups. I feel the food going down and I cannot get myself to swallow right away. The only medication I take on a regular basis is Wal-Zyr (generica for Zyrtec). I was recently diagnosed with Acid Refleux Disease (mild form).

Hello
Thanks for your question.
Acid reflux disease can cause inflammation of the esophagus lining causing reflux esophagitis.
This is the common cause explaining your symptoms.
You need to start taking omeprazole daily as prescribed by your doctor.
Improvement will occur over next 3-4 weeks.
Also watch your diet closely.
Avoid any caffeine, alcohol, acidic foods, hot and spicy foods.
Try to eat well cooked meals mainly vegetarian diet and tenderized meat.
Aloe vera juice half cup daily, peppermint tea, also help with these symptoms
You can take maalox 30 ml liuid before meals to help with the swallowing.
Also consider seeing a gastroenterogist for an endoscopy.
I understand about the inflammation of the esophagus, however, does the reflux also cause the problem of swallowing?
yes it does.
inflammation of the esophagus makes it difficult to swallow.
strictures are also possible from chronic inflammation.
that is why an endoscopy is essential.
also malignancy of the esophagus should be ruled out although this is a low risk.
I had an endoscopy 2-3 months ago and all the Dr. mentioned was that I had a mild case of reflux. I do not like taking medications and have read the side effects of the Omeprazole. Are there any natural remedies available to me instead of medications?
ok that is reassuring.
You can try over the counter Ranitidine tablets 2 tablets twice daily.
Omeprazole can be used for short term like 4 to 6 weeks safely.
Naturally, take aloe vera juice, peppermint tea to control acid reflux.
Okay, if I were to take the Omeprazole for one month, can I stop then? Reason for my question is that I read the instructions and it stated not to stop this medication suddenly and without doctor's approval.
That is the usual instruction you will get with any medication.
Yes you can stop after discussing with your doctor once your symptoms are well controlled.
Thank you for your assistance. God Bless.
