Customer Question

I have something on my nail that appears green and is underneath the nail. It does not hurt and I had recently been wearing artificial nails. Could this be fungus? Picture is available.

Hello.

Welcome to Just Answer and thank you for the question.

I am Dr. Sohaib, a Medical Internist (who deals with diseases of all the organ systems of body) and i will do my best to find an answer for you.

Please tell me since how long do you have this?

You can post the picture here, that will be helpful for me.

I discovered it yesterday, after I removed the artifical nails. I remember having a small open, irritated, spot near my cutical on that same finger.

Thank you very much.

I have seen the picture.

The first thing i would think of is a fungal infection.

A subungal hematoma/haemorrhage (that is in the resolving stage), which can occur as a result of trauma to the nail/finger (many a times un-noticed) can also give a green color under the nail.

Bacterial infection is another possibility.

You should have a consultation with a dermatologist for a clinical examination which will help to ascertain the exact underlying cause for this which will direct a specific and targetted management plan [may be wait and watch, or antifungal or antibiotics etc].

I would have been worried too if i were at your place, but let me re-assure you that these problems (which i have mentioned) are treatable.

So stay relaxed and try to get to a dermatologist for further management plan.

Do not polish your nails for few more days, as you need to keep this under observation.

I hope this clarifies and answers your question.

Kindest Regards XXXXX XXXXX luck.
