how to wean off metoprolol

Customer Question

how to wean off metoprolol

Hi there...

Meoprolol is beta blocker and these medications should not be stopped abruptly so if you are taking 100mg of Metoprolol then reduce it to 75mg for one week then after one week reduce to 50 mg,then 25 mg and then gradually stop it,because this drug blocks the B1 receptors in heart so if abrupt withdrawl occurs then it can result in to arrythmia,so ideally it should be withdrawn slowly.

Hello
Second opinion.
You should only do this under the supervision of your physician.
Not by yourself.
It looks like you are trying to control your blood pressure with diet and not meds.

The beta blocker should be replaced initially to avoid rebound, not just wean off with no other med or therapy.
I can help you further if you let me know what you are trying to do and why.

I am on only 25mg er once a day for a long time how do i wean myself from that metoprolol
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 4 years ago.
Ok
Which metoprolol preparation this this
Metoprolol ER extended release?
Or regular
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 4 years ago.
OK
One way would be to go to an every other day dose.
Monitory carefully
For at least a week.
Then off.
Monitor carefully.
You doctor needs to to this.
And your doctor can give you a medicine such as an ACE inhibitor temporarily, which dose not have the problems with rebound later...if needed.
