my 10 year old is complaining of pain on his left side right below the ribcage area. what could this be

Has he had any surgeries before? Any vomiting or fevers? Is he hungry?

he ate some lunch no fever no surgeries

Well, this could be the diaphragm, muscles in the ribs or the stomach.
Usually this is not of much concern. Another possibility is constipation.
He should eat a bland diet for the next 24 hours, rice crackers, juice, toast.
If he develops vomiting, fever and/or right sided abdominal pain- or other concerning symptoms, he needs to see a physician right away

You can give him tylenol for pain as needed
