Do all ovarian cysts have their own blood supply or is it more

This answer was rated:

Do all ovarian cysts have their own blood supply or is it more significant when a physician tells you that the ovarian cyst that you have has its own blood supply?

911DOC :

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer,

911DOC :

An ovarian cyst... if it is truly an ovarian cyst... gets it's blood supply from the ovary itself which gets it's blood supply from the ovarian artery...

911DOC :

as shown here...

911DOC :

http://www.tubal.org/OvarianBloodSupply.htm

911DOC :

when the doctor is talking about a 'cyst with it's own blood supply'.... we enter into a darker realm where one wonders about a dermoid cyst, a form of cancer.... or ovarian cancer itself....

911DOC :

but an ovarian cyst is simply a bulge in the ovary.... it is fluid filled but ALL ovary....

911DOC :

standing by...

Customer:

So if that is the case, exploratory surgery and biopsy would be necessary if the "cyst" does have its own blood supply...to determine if it is a dermoid cyst or some type of malignant cyst?

911DOC :

that would certainly be a reasonable thing to do.... i take it this was discovered on ultrasound or contrast enhanced CT scan?

Customer:

ultrasound showed an ovarian cyst, but I did not know that ultrasound was that specific enough to show its own blood supply....interesting, thank you

911DOC :

yes, the ultraound has a doppler function that can show blood flow...

911DOC :

they routinely look at blood flow to the ovary....

911DOC :

do you have any more questions?

911DOC :

about this?

Customer:

also, if it is a cyst with its own blood supply and it ruptures, I am assuming that there would be more danger of internal bleeding .

911DOC :

well there WOULD be internal bleeding... the question is hard to answer because it would depend on the pressure put forth by the vessel supplying the cyst/ pseudocyst....

911DOC :

but even true ovarian cysts upon rupture can bleed enough to require surgery to remove the ovary or stop the bleeding.

Customer:

Thank you very much, very informative.

911DOC :

you are very welcome.....
