Customer Question

What conditions could cause electrolyte imbalance, severe anemia, and abnormal thyroid readings?
Submitted: 6 years ago.
Category: Medical
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 6 years ago.
What are her known medical conditions and medications? How ill is she and why is she afraid to go to the hospital?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
The lady has not seen a doctor in many years, but two years seemed to have suffered an attack of total exhaustion, after which she started to lose weight, but refused to see a doctor. She is afraid because she does not know what she is dealing with.
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 6 years ago.
But I assume she has at least seen a doctor that ran tests and found the above problems? Why does he want her in the hospital?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
The doctor wants to make further tests.
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 6 years ago.
Well, there are so many possibilities as to the problem here, what exactly would you like to know?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
Could a thyroid condition or malignance produce the anemia and the electrolyte imbalance?
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 6 years ago.
Untreated, low thyroid could do that and a malignancy might explain the weight loss. Of course, if she has emotional problems and hasn't been eating, that could do the same thing. Further testing alone wouldn't require actually being in the hospital, but malnutrition and severe anemia would.

Does malignancy in the thyroid metastasize outside of the gland itself, or does it stay confined within the gland?
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 6 years ago.
It can stay in the gland if it's follicular or papillary, but medullary carcinoma can often metastasize.
