Since when you have this problem?
About a week.
Do you have any previous medical problems ?
like diabetes ?
high blood pressure ?
or any other illness for which you got treatment ?
No. I am overweight but glucose is ok. Blood pressure is good. Do have high cholesterol and take Vitorin.
Ok, Do you have some other symptoms like weakness in the legs ?
No. This just started in my left leg only.
Any problems with passing urine or stools ?
do you have paresthesia or absent sensations in the pelvic area ?
No. I feel fine except for this pain.
Back pain ?
No more then usual. I stand for my job during the day. The pain comes when I stand or sit or lay down.
Does these symptoms increases when you bend down to pick something from ground without bending your knees ?
No. Nothing I do brings on the attack. It comes and goes with out being provoked.
Well, thank you for your input.
It feels internal not muscular
Your symptoms are more likely indicative of pinching of nerve between the back vertebrae.
In your case most likely lumbar 3 and 4 nerves are pinched.
This can happen if you have some slipped disc, or weak backbone.
What about sciatica? Can osteoporosis be a problem?
In this case you need is an evaluation by a neurologist or neurosurgeon whoever is available in your area.
Yes in simple words this is called sciatica
It came on suddenly
In this problem you have to take care of
symptoms like difficulty in passing stools and urine.
As these are symptoms of neurosurgical emergency.
This problems needs tests like MRI of the back to see the extent of pinching of the nerve.
Most of the cases get relief by
taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.
And pain killers like tylenol and advil.
If this does not help your doctor may need to give you more stronger pain medicine.
Your thoughts ?
I am not having any problems with stools and urine passing. I started taking both Vit D and Calcium this week. Is this something that will pass?
Yes in most cases this problem recovers with physiotherapy
but it is best to get tests like MRI to see the extent of the nerve pinching.
As it will help in evaluation of the extent of the problem and will help you to make plan of treatment.
Your thoughts ? Questions ?
Right now its feeling fine but the bouts are awful. I will mention all of your suggestions to my doctor. My worried were blood clots in my leg. Is that a concern?
It is less likely to be a clot with such symptoms.
because there should be swelling and redness with clot problem.
Good. What would cause my spine to pinch the nerve?
nerves which supply the legs
pass between the back vertebrae.
If these bones are weak or there is slipped disc then this can lead to pinched nerve.
So both bone problems and disc slipping can lead to this problem.
It is very common in ages above 50-60 years.
This can happen this quickly?
Yes this can happen quickly.
and mostly symptoms appear in one leg first.
I seem to fit the symptoms. I couldn't stand the pain if it were in both legs. I will talk to my doctor.
Yes this is the best way to approach this problem, initially your general practitioner and then a neurologist or a neurosurgeon should deal this.
Could you feel a slipped disk when you turn over on the side that hurts?
Tests like MRI of the spine are best and non invasive tests for this.
Ok. I have something to work with. Thank you.
As these discs are small and most of them slip within the the limits of the vertebrae so it is less likely that you can feel the disc. unless there is very large deformity.
But would you feel pain when turning from back to side in bed?
Ok you have more questions for me ?
yes you can have such pain.
because when you move your spine position changes
and this can put more pressure on the nerve.
Well...you have been most helpful. It sounds like my problem. Thank you.
