Throat hurts when I cough. Feels like a burning sensation.

This answer was rated:

my throat hurts when I cough. Feels like a burning sensation. Went to ENT last week. He looked down my throat with a lighted scope through my nose. Said he didn't see anything. I am really worried, thinking the worst, like throat cancer. Could he have missed something?

How long and how frequently are you having the symptoms?

Do you have sputum or is it a dry cough?

Do you take any medicine now?

Did you have any other test?

Do you have any other symptom or previous illness?

Thank you.

on and off for about 2 weeks. Sometimes dry and sometimes w/sputum (clear)
throating clearing
Thank you for the information,

Repeated coughing can cause burning sensation, it can hurt in the throat too.

When the sputum is dry and clear, this can be due to inflammation.

When the ENT doctor did not find any thing, allergy can be a factor.

Your ENT doctor unlikely to miss.

He has scoped your throat to detect any possibility of cancer.

You can try otc zyrtec or claritin.

You may take a consultation of an allergist to exclude allergic factors.

If the allergist feels, you can have an repeat evaluation from the ENT specialist.

Please feel free for any follow up query.

Best wishes.

thank you for reassuring me. I do have a follow-up tomorrow. I need to admit I am a smoker, 5-6 a day. trying to stop. been under a great deal of stress as a single mom. Now, I am worried that I have throat cancer, and its something I could have possibly avoided.
In the follow up examination doctor can reassure you with current development.

You should try to stop smoking, if needed with professional help.

Smoking can cause laryngitis, bronchitis which can produce dry cough and burning sensation.

Warm saline gurgling can be done.
