i just read an ad for neutronic ear. is it a reasonable choice for hearing-impaired people? does it use the same small batteries as physician prescribed hearing aids?

The batteries are not the same.
It can not substitute for a hearing aid since it is merely an amplification devices where as a hearing aid will help with the range of hearing that is actually impaired, much more effective.
However, as to its suitability it can be used, not with as good results.
